THE FABRIC OF PERCEPTION: BODY IMAGE IN A FAST FASHION WORLD

My practice began in Fine Art, where I explored body image and identity through painting. Now, as part of my MA in Fashion Innovation, I merge art with fashion to challenge societal beauty standards and promote sustainability. By reinterpreting classical paintings on repurposed garments, I aim to spark conversations about body image and empower individuals to embrace diversity and make conscious fashion choices.

ABOUT

For my MA in Fashion Innovation, I am exploring the intersection of body image, fine art, and fashion to initiate a conversation about the impact of societal beauty standards on young women. Drawing from my background in fine art, I have reinterpreted classic paintings of women's bodies, transforming them into thought-provoking visual statements about body image. These reimagined artworks are printed onto upcycled garments and fabrics, creating a unique, campaign-style collection that challenges traditional perceptions of beauty.

As part of this project, I am collaborating with The Recreational Wardrobe, a platform dedicated to promoting sustainability and addressing the impact of fast fashion. Together, we will host a Wardrobe Talk focused on how fast fashion contributes to idealized beauty standards and the pressure these trends place on women’s self-image. Through this collection and accompanying discussions, I aim to encourage a more inclusive and sustainable approach to fashion, while empowering women to embrace their individuality and challenge harmful beauty norms.

Megan's words

'As an artist, I feel a deep responsibility to reflect the struggles faced by myself and other young women, using my work as a platform to foster open discussion. Through my practice, I aim to address these experiences, and in collaboration with another woman who leads workshops on sustainability, I am expanding this dialogue to empower others and raise awareness around the impact of fast fashion and societal beauty standards'.
